Well, the MTMS update for Western Australia was quite extensive. I checked out a couple of rural x2 phones, they all had SMS sending capabilities. I also noticed that the update, patched the possibility of retreiving the SMSC number (By pressing *(redial) after sending a message), which use too be possible. They may also have patched the SMS straw trick, I couldn't test, as there wasn't any straws around. They don't let the options screen appear untill 20 cents is entered. If you press #, though it still pops up for about 10seconds with only one option(there usually are three i.e. Create new SMS, Send Premade SMS, Additional options), which is "Create new SMS", alas if you press [OK] you get the 'Not Enough Credit' screen. When you press the # key the symbol appears underneath the 'Create new SMS' icon and if you press a number such as 7 straight after the # key it flashes 'Service not Available'. It is possible to press # and a row of numbers, such as 12731, with out the 'Service not Available' message popping up, which has got me pondering. So if anyone has any ideas, more information on their states MTMS update, Or just want too ramble about the TSP/X2/X1/CT3H/Whatever, like I just have done, then please, make a post.
Has anyone waited at a booth and seen when the mtms call happens?
Yes, I have, in many different places. The update usually takes place (from my observations in WA towns and cities) between 12:01-2:00am. You can tell when the phone is communicating with MTMS as the LCD screen reads 'Phone Busy - Please Wait' and has an icon of a clock rotating to the left of the screen. If you pick up the reciever while the message is displayed you will get dial tone and the LCD screen will return to the normal telstra display, which could mean you broke the payphones modem connection to MTMS because when you put the handset back down, the 'Phone Busy - Please Wait' message falshes back up - almost instantly. Also, I have seen three payphones in a row, where all three were communicating with MTMS at about 1:45, on a friday.
But then again, how long would the average call to MTMS be? Would it just be a quick modem connection, the payphone sends the status information, MTMS replies with an 'OK', and the call is terminated?
That is something we should find out. I have never waited for the connection to finish (usually because it is a drunken stumble through town when I notice the phone is communicating.), though I can say I have definitely watched it for more then 5 minutes.
I wonder if these X2's do something different with MTMS, I mean, how else would they be able to determine how much money is left on the EFTPOS card, for credit?
This is very interesting. I wonder if the payphone communicates with Argent or the Transend EFTPOS carriage service? With all these new features and options being added, I feel the TSP may find itself open to new methods of exploitation.
