1	INTRODUCTION

The original RCMTerm was written by myself to provide staff with a tool for programming and storing data for RCM & SSN 30 channel systems. It was written in assembly language to keep the program file small and to maintain compatibility with early laptop computers which had small hard drives or a floppy drive only. RCMTerm provided features for RCM & SSN equipment which were not available in any other communications program. Telstra staff used RCMTerm because of its ease of use and features and eventually, RCMTerm became the national standard.

As RCMTerm was written in assembler, Telstra has not been able to provide ongoing support for the program. All development and support has been provided by myself.

With new maintenance arrangements, additional features are required. They are:

Connection to NASI driver for access to modem pool on LAN.
Directory control for large number of files.
Improved error checking and greater speed when uploading & downloading.
Polling of RCM's for backup & error checking.
	Full support by Telstra.

The RCMTerm functions are now available as Ozterm version 6.2 scripts which simulate the old RCMTerm. Additional features provided by Ozterm are:

Terminal emulation (OMI) that will communicate with RCM/SSN equipment.
User interface consistent with Standard Operating Environment.
Will run under MSDOS or Windows in multi sessions.
Connection via Dial up modem, LAN, TCP/IP, Int 14 Gateways, & MDX data switches.
	File management systems.
	Automatic scheduling of script files.
	Advanced connect file routines.
Up to 4500 lines of screen buffer.
	Full support by Telstra.

Ozterm 6.2 has proven to be an ideal front end for the new version of RCMTerm and the script files provide a more reliable, faster and fully featured tool for installation and maintenance of RCM and SSN equipment.

2.	INSTALLATION

2.2	Ozterm Paths

The Ozterm file LOCAL.DAT is used to setup pathnames for Ozterm and RCM files. The variables required are:-

	_hdrv Drive for Ozterm program
	_ozbase	Ozterm base directory
	OZPATH	_hdrv + _ozbase
	DIR0 OZPATH + \CMDS\
_workdrv	Drive for Ozterm working files
_workpath	Directory for Ozterm working files
_utildrv Drive for RCM EU/RU save files
_utilbase	Directory for RCM EU/RU save files

On CLS LAN the working directory is automatically set to H:\OZTERM\SESSnum, where num is the session number. The RCM files in section 2.1 would be loaded in F:\APPS\OZTERM\CMDS\RCM.
F:\APPS is mapped to O: as root directory which is automatically set by the CLS DCL script.

RCM EU/RU save files would be located in G:\RCM on the local server or mapped to another network drive on a remote server. As Ozterm file manager is only able to access 300 files in each directory, sub-directories would need to be configured for a larger number of files.

eg.

_hdrv F:\ (with mapping)
_ozbase	|____ apps O:\
OZPATH |____ ozterm |____ ozterm
DIR0 |____ cmds |____ cmds

2.3	Connection to Datagate

The Ozterm CONNECT.CMD command file is used for connection to datagates. Function key F9 is used for connection and F10 for disconnection. Additional files are required for the NASI interface which re-directs the comms port though the LAN. These files are:

RCM_NASI.TXT Connects LAN server. (first file specified in LOCAL.DAT, _devdata variable).
RCM_DIAL.TXT	Provides call number for datagate.
EXCHANGE.INC	Points to DIAL text files for second stage connection. This is a site dependant file.
DXMCON.INC Datagate connection routine
LANCON.INC LAN NASI connection routine

DXMDISC.INC Datagate disconnection routine.
LANDISC.INC LAN NASI disconnection routine.

3.	OPERATION

Ozterm should be started in Full Duplex mode for communication with both Datagates and RCMs. Commands may then be entered from the keyboard. The Esc key is used to abort any activity in Ozterm but the Esc character #27 is not sent to the port. Ctrl "C" can be used to send Esc character to port to abort RCM commands etc. Use the Home key to display the Ozterm pull down menus. See Ozterm User Guide detailed description.

RCMTerm facilities are provided using Ozterm script files and are accessed using function key F2. This function key is set up when a datagate is connected or another function key may be configured if required. Standard Ozterm files to perform all datagate connection and disconnection tasks independently of RCMTerm.

When RCMTerm (RCM scripts) are required the Main Menu is accessed using the assigned function key. The Main Menu shows the options for RCM and changes the communication mode from full duplex to OMI for RCM prompts. Full duplex mode is restored when RCMTerm is exited.

Options in the Main Menu are selected by typing a single letter eg. "A" for Alarms. Other RCM menus allow selection using the cursor keys but will disappear if unexpected data is received.

RCMTerm may be accessed or exited at any time with safety as current channel and alarm settings are stored on exit and are reloaded automatically when required.

Backup and test schedules are performed accessing the Ozterm PMB Menu system. This allows scheduled routines on a regular basis. Datagates listed in file DEXCHNGE.LST are connected and scanned for RCM ports. RCMs are then connected and interrogated for backup data and statistics. A list is then provided with results such as reversed lines or failed connections. Scheduled routines are not yet available.

4. CHANNEL MENU

One of the more useful functions of RCMTerm is the ability to set all channel parameters on-screen, and then transfer the settings to the RCM in bulk without needing to know the command syntax.

+port2 - TRANSMIT - OMI - Full dpx - Block - No log - No ovr - Direct+

The Channel Menu is selected from the Main Menu with option "C".
Use option "Q" to quit and return to Main Menu.

When the menu is selected an edit field is shown in red over the channel number. This field may be moved using the up/down keys.

4.1	Changing Channel Parameters

Channels may be selected using the left/right cursor keys when the edit field is over "Channel". Alternatively the channels may be selected by typing the channel number and pressing the Enter key. The channel number may be changed at any time whilst in the Channel Menu.

Channel parameters are shown below the channel number. The parameters may be changed by moving the edit field with the up/down keys and changing the setting with the left/right keys.

When the TYPE parameter is changed, default values for TX, RX, EQU and PRES are automatically set, but may be changed individually if defaults are not required.

Channel types available for selection are:

SE SE Indial SS
SS SxS SS Indial CO IU1 50Hz
CO IU1 12KHz CO IU2 Bal CO IU2 Bal SxS
CO IU2 Unbal CO IU2 Unbal SxS CO IU3
CO IU4X 50Hz CO IU4X 12KHz CO IU4S Bal
CO IU4S Bal SxS CO IU4S Unbal CO IU4S Unbal SxS
CO IU4T CO IU4E CO IU6E
CO IU6R CO IU7X CO IU7S
DA
Channel TX & RX levels range from -15 to 16 in 1db steps, with NA for no level settings.

Equ values range from 0 to 16 in 1 db steps, with NA for no equ setting.

Pres values include Off, 600Z, 1200Z, CMPLX and P/TN1, P/TN2, P/TN3 & P/TN4. The trained values P/TN1 to P/TN4 are stored, but the channels must be re-trained if power is lost. Also if Pres value of "Off" or "0", is returned during downloading, it must be set prior to restoration. This will be addressed with future versions.

VF is set to either On or Off.

4.2	Copy and Paste Functions

Selecting Copy to Clipboard "C" copies all current channel parameters to the clipboard. The Paste from Clipboard option will then appear showing the clipboard contains valid data.
Selecting "P" will paste the clipboard to the current channel. This feature can be used for rapid duplication of channels.

4.3	View RCM Channel Settings

RCM settings may be viewed in bulk by pressing "V" to view the channel settings. Two screens are shown. The first screen shows the TYPE settings for all channels and the second screen shows level settings. Use "N" for next screen, "P" for previous screen or "Q" to quit and return to Channel Menu.

4.4	Sending Parameters to RCM

Option "S" Send Channel Menu allows selection of particular channels and parameters to be sent to the RCM. Use TAB Shift/Tab keys to move around this screen. Pressing the Enter key will result in all selections being transferred to the RCM. Setting the first channel to 0 will abort the transfer and return to Channel Menu.

8. TRANSFER MENU

Another important feature of RCMTerm is the ability to upload and download data between the PC and RCM. This allows storing of data for backup purposes. Past versions of RCMTerm have been relitavely unreliable when tranferring data, particually in remote mode. As the comms port on the RCM includes no handshaking, timing was very important if reliable transferring of data was to be achieved. An attampt was made to fix this by providing delays between characters when sent to line, but this had only limited success.
This version of RCMTerm has more advanced error checking routines. This allows faster transfers and more reliable operation.
